[Abstract]:Saul Bellow (1915-2005) is an American Jewish novelist in the 20th century and an important modern writer after Hemingway and Faulkner. Most of his works are set in Chicago, an industrial city in the middle of the United States, exploring nature, civilization and the meaning of human life. "Herzog" shows the protagonist Moses Herzog's confused state of mind during a five-day journey. Spiritual wandering and suffering spirit. Post-modernism theory is a very broad concept, which originates from the changes in the field of western art. In literature, it is the inheritance and development of modernism, against the grand narrative of modernism. The author begins with the parody, alienation and intertextuality of postmodernism, and interprets the parody of the protagonist Moses Herzog in Herzog, the alienation of Herzog and his self-sublimation. Bellow enriches the text by collage and quotation. Through the analysis, it is concluded that the parody, alienation and intertextuality of postmodernism in Herzog are only the means and methods for the author to truly depict the society and the image of the characters at that time. His ultimate aim is to reveal through the transformation of the thought and destiny of the protagonist Moses Herzog: there is only one way to meaningful existence, that is, in this absurd and alienated modern society, we should re-examine ourselves and society. And shoulder the responsibility to yourself and to others. Bellow's Herzog presents people's living conditions, distorted values and turbulent social conditions in the United States after the war. At the end of the novel, Moses Herzog finally abandoned self-alienation, returned to nature, faced the world with a calm mind, and completed the transcendence of self. Therefore, the conclusion of this paper points out that it is also important to interpret Herzog from the perspective of postmodernism.
